Incontinence Q & A

What is urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence refers to the inability to control the contents of your bladder, whether it’s a tiny dribble or full leakage.

Many women experience urinary incontinence but it’s not something you should expect or have to live with as you get older. Dr. Paas can provide treatment to help you improve your bladder control.

What are the types of urinary incontinence?

There are many types of urinary incontinence. The most common that affect women include:

Stress urinary incontinence
Stress incontinence is the most common type of incontinence and can develop in younger women as well as older women. With this type of incontinence, you may experience loss of urine when pressure is placed on your bladder. The pressure can be something as light as a laugh or as heavy as picking up a box.

Urge urinary incontinence
Also referred to as overactive bladder, urge incontinence causes you to experience a sudden and uncontrollable urge to urinate that may cause you to lose the contents of your bladder before you reach the bathroom.

You may also experience both stress and urge urinary incontinence, which is referred to as mixed incontinence.

If you’re experiencing any degree of urinary incontinence, Dr. Paas recommends you schedule an appointment so you can start treatment before your symptoms worsen.

What are the treatments for incontinence?

Treatment for your incontinence may depend on the type of incontinence you have and the severity of your symptoms. You may be able to regain control over your bladder by making changes to your routine, such as limiting your fluid intake, creating a bathroom schedule, and holding your urine to strengthen the muscles.

Dr. Paas also offers innovative treatments for incontinence, including:

O-Shot®
The O-Shot is a nonsurgical procedure that uses your own growth factors to stimulate vaginal and clitoral rejuvenation, and it may also help your stress urinary incontinence.

V-LASE®
V-LASE is a painless, nonsurgical in-office treatment for vaginal and vulvar tissue rejuvenation. V-LASE uses fractional nonablative CO2 laser technology to shrink and tighten your vaginal tissue, while at the same time stimulating the production of new blood vessels to restore moisture and normal vaginal pH. Improving vaginal health also benefits those suffering from stress urinary incontinence.
